On Writing

Stephen King has certainly been playing the game long enough to have something to say. I knew I'd want to read On Writing as soon as I heard about it. I don't understand any writer wanting to pass up the opportunity to read this book. Even if Stephen King is not your cup of tea (and he'd be the first to admit he's not everyone's favorite), On Writing offers insight into the work habits of one of the most popular writers around.

On Writing is filled with Stephen King's no-bullshit approach to writing. He never preaches about what you should do. He simply lets you know the things that have worked for him. He starts by writing about some of the events in his life that shaped him into the writer he is, then he talks about the tools a writer needs. He touches only briefly on grammar and style, moves into the art of telling a good story, and then discusses work habits.

Stephen King began On Writing before he was struck by a van in the summer of 1999. A Postscript in the book deals with the accident in detail, as well as what it took for King to begin writing again.

Stephen King gets down to the business of this book fluidly and without wasting words. The end result is an insightful, entertaining, and worthwhile reading experience that almost every writer will gain something from. On Writing is published by Scribner. Grab yourself a copy and enjoy.
